The Kirin Island Planning Exhibition Center, located in Jining, the Hometown of Confucius and Mencius, is an embodiment of regional characteristics reinterpreted through modern techniques. The design draws inspiration from the culture of Jining and the concept of "round sky and square earth," creating a square building with a round courtyard to achieve a serene atmosphere. The project is a testament to the innovative approach of Zhubo Design, who have managed to create a modern and simple architectural form with regional characteristics.
The uniqueness of the project lies in its dual functionality. Initially, it serves as a planning exhibition and investment promotion center for the Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Industrial Park of Jining High-tech District. Later, it transforms into an urban exhibition hall integrated into the surrounding public space. The design team put forward six design concepts: "Round and Square, Axial Symmetry, A Floating Box, Kylin-Like Exterior, Integration of space and Beyond the Bounds," which have been beautifully executed in the project.
The technical realization of the design is equally impressive. The building is a frame-shear wall structure with a north-south overhang of 10.3m and a span of 18.6m between the two traffic cores in the middle. This long-span structure realizes a pillar-less indoor space, creating a broad and through overall space. The far-reaching overhangs on the north and south sides create a semi-outdoor activity space for the public.
The project faced several design challenges, including the design and construction of large span concrete structures and the integration of local culture into the design. Despite these challenges, Zhubo Design managed to create an architectural masterpiece that not only embodies the local culture but also stands out for its simplicity and material texture.
The Kirin Island Planning Exhibition Center is a prime example of how modern design can reinterpret traditional elements to create structures that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. It is a testament to Zhubo Design's innovative approach and their commitment to creating designs that are unique, functional, and culturally relevant.
The project's recognition with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2023 is a testament to its design excellence. The award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and the Kirin Island Planning Exhibition Center certainly fits the bill. With its remarkable level of excellence and its ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder, it is indeed a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
